The Pouzay Dovecote - Le pigeonnier de Pouzay

A lord's privilege that was abolished at the time of the Revolution, the free-standing pigeon house or dovecote is a building that may be either round or square. This dovecote has 2700 recesses or wallopenings and could house approximately 5000 pigeons. Such intensive piegon rearing produced a much-demanded fertiliser, pigeon manure. A well protruding cornice inhibited rats and weasels from climbing the walls and getting into the building through the dormer windows. A vertical ladder, suspended from brackets fixed to a central pole, pivoted on its own base and provided access to the nests themselves. Over time, an oak tree has replaced the original roof and gives it an incredible silhouette.

Privilège seigneurial aboli à la Révolution, le colombier à pieds ou "fuie" est un édifice isolé soit rond ou carré. Ce pigeonnier compte 2700 niches ou "boulins" et pouvait à l'époque loger environ 5000 pigeons. Cet élevage intensif produisait également un engrais très recherché, appelé "colombine". Une corniche nettement en saillie empêchait rats et belettes de grimper le long des murs pour pénétrer dans l'édifice par une des lucarnes. Une échelle verticale, sur pendue à des potences fixées sur un mât central pivotant sur sa base, permettait l'accès aux nids. Au fil du temps, un chêne a remplacé la toiture initiale pour lui dessiner une silhouette insolite.
